“So come on, let’s leave the preschool fingerpainting exercises on Christ and get on with the grand work of art. Grow up in Christ. The basic foundational truths are in place: turning your back on “salvation by self-help” and turning in trust toward God; baptismal instructions; laying on of hands; resurrection of the dead; eternal judgment. God helping us, and we’ll stay true to all that. But there’s so much more. Let’s get on with it!” Hebrews 6:1-3(MSG)
Higher things are principles that would lead you to spiritual growth, they are activities to be done on the journey to spiritual maturity. Our opening scripture wrote about how it is time to “Grow up in Christ”. Yes, we are saved already, but is that all?! Of course, No. There is much more than the preschool fingerpainting exercises in Christ (the salvation), and it is the grand work of art— the building on our salvation, which is the foundation. Meaning, there is much more to our salvation, which is growing up in Christ. Now is the time to start building on that foundation (SALVATION).
As long as you have been raised with Christ into a new life, it is important that you forget your old life and the things that are about it, and focus on and seek the things that are above where we now reside— the higher things, as this is a prerequisite to spiritual growth and maturity.
“ Colossians 3:2 And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.”
Consistency in your walk with God and labor of love is the first principle that our man of God, Pastor Binuyo Olutomiwa, mentioned. Stay the course, keep at it, and make sure not to drag your feet on the path God has called you to. If you’re heading towards maturity, it’s important to keep up with God at every level of your walk with him.
Second, it’s important to be diligent and sincere. Proverbs 22:29 instructs us to do so. Whatever you do or have in your hands, do it sincerely and with the whole of your heart. The third principle is patience. If you want to improve, you must learn to be patient; don’t rush things! Patience is a prerequisite for the fulfillment of God’s promises so take it easy and slow, confident that God’s in the picture all the way.
Another principle is steadfast hope. It refers to being firm, unwavering, and persistently confident in God. Hebrews 6:1 MSG admonishes us to leave the preschool stuff and get on with grown-up teachings. No matter the situation, seek the Higher things: staying confident, strong, and unwavering in your hope in God.
Finally, stay conscious of your identity and your new creation realities in Christ Jesus. One of the very foundations of your faith is your identity in Christ. Without this consciousness, growth cannot be achieved.
So beloved, God has given you the strength to forge ahead in your walk and work with God. And to see tangible growth, these are the principles to focus on! Begin each day with them in mind, applying them in ways little or big!
